Townhouse La Piconera

The property is located in Vejer de la Frontera in Andalucia, Southern Spain, on the beautiful Atlantic coast. Vejer de la Frontera is a classic, white, Moorish hilltop town perched high above the steep gorge of the river Barbate and is virtually unknown to foreign tourists. Until a couple of decades ago, the women of Vejer wore long, dark cloaks that veiled their faces like nuns’ habits, but this custom is now almost extinct.

It is a magical place to explore, with its brilliant white cobbled alleyways, iron-grilled windows, balconies and patios with terracotta pots filled with flowers and dozens of small tapas bars and restaurants. There is a magnificent castle and beautiful church. The town square, which is situated just a few minutes walk from the properties, has a wonderful old fountain with traditional ceramic Andalucian frogs, which spout water high into the air. There is a daily fruit/veg, meat and fish market and there are several small bakeries and grocery shops, as well as a good sized supermarket in the new part of town.

This is a part of Spain where mass tourism is unknown, the pace of life is very slow and everything is very Spanish – Lunch goes on forever! Very few locals speak English (so bring your dictionary!) but foreigners are made to feel very welcome.

The beaches along this coast are amongst the best in Europe – huge stretches of golden sand that are – weekends aside – virtually deserted. The nearest beach is 10 minutes away by car. The coast is dotted with little towns with bars and fish restaurants, from where you can watch the wind- and kitesurfers. Windsurfing equipment can be rented from Club Mistral windsurfing centre near Tarifa.

The stunning mountains of the Alcornocales Nature Park can be explored on foot or by bicycle and a local company organises guided trips into the mountains, as well as kayaking. (Details on request). The Parque Naturel de Donana, north of Cadiz, is one of Europe’s best known bird watching areas. Towns such as Medina Sidonia, Cadiz and Tarifa are well worth a visit and slightly further afield are Seville (2 hours drive) and Gibraltar (1 hours drive). There is a regular ferry service from Tarifa to Tangier in Morocco and the crossing only takes 30 minutes.

For golf and horseriding enthusiasts, the Montenmedio country estate is only 5 minutes away by car. This 120 hectacre nature park of outstanding beauty offers one of the finest golf courses in Europe as well as horseriding and other outdoor activities.

The nearest airports are Jerez (45 minutes drive), Gibraltar (1 hours drive) and Malaga (2 ½ hours drive). Car rental is available at both airports.

This 400-year old townhouse was renovated at the beginning of 2006. Whilst maintaining many of its original features, it is light and spacious with high standard fixtures and fittings. There is a traditional, fully equipped wooden kitchen with granite worktops and a beautifully tiled floor throughout. The choice of furniture and lighting gives the house a warm and cosy atmosphere The property is situated in one of the quiet, cobbled streets in the old part of Vejer, just a few minutes walk from the Plaza d’Espana.

Accommodation is over 2 floors. The fully furnished bedrooms are bright and spacious and duvets, pillows and bedlinen are provided. The twin-bedded room has a door leading onto the terrace, which has stunning views.
Rental prices are per week for 4 persons and include electricity, bedlinen, towels and cleaning at the end of your stay.
